Guide - How to install Legacy Update
September 20, 2025 @ 7:09 PM

So, let's say you have an old Windows PC just lying around
collecting dust and you want to do something with it,
like installing MSN and patching it to work again.
But to your surprise, it can't connect! Your root certificates
along with many other things are out of date!

This is where the hero of the story comes in, Legacy Update!

Legacy Update is a piece of software, that fixes Windows Update
on many old versions of Windows ranging from Windows 2000 all
the way to Windows 8.1!

What this does, is it patches the Windows Update Agent to use
Legacy Update's servers instead of the old and dead Microsoft
servers; along with stuff like enabling POSReady 2009 updates
on XP or updating root certificates so you can connect to stuff
like CrossTalk.

1. Downloading Legacy Update

INFO: Internet Explorer is required
Alright, once you arrive on the Legacy Update site, you're going to want to scroll down until you find a button labelled "Install Legacy Update".
Click on this button and you'll be greeted by a download popup.
Click on "Run" and wait until it's done downloading.
However, once it's done downloading, you'll see a window with big Legacy Update branding along with some checkboxes like "Update root certificates store" or "Legacy Update", depending on what version of Windows you're running, these checkboxes may vary. Anyways, the important one for this guide is the "Legacy Update" checkbox. If isn't already checked, click on the checkbox and click on the "Install" button.

2. Installing Legacy Update

After you've clicked on "Install", you're going to have to wait a bit until it's finished, in the meantime you can see some logs about what the installer is doing and such. Sooner or later the installer is going to finish and the computer is going to restart. Once it's done restarting, you may see a new user show up known as "LegacyUpdateTemp", this is just a temporary account that the installer has made to do some things and it should disappear after a bit. But now the first run Legacy Update page is going to open in Internet Explorer. Time to play the waiting game again, because Legacy Update takes a while on first run to get updates.

3. Using Legacy Update

After first run, Legacy Update will check for updates using the Windows Update Agent or if you open the Legacy Update site in Internet Explorer, using an ActiveX plugin that needs to be enabled at all times. Other than that, have fun using your old Windows PC!
