Another case of mass creation of lost media - October 16, 2025

So, Microsoft shut the Xbox LIVE Marketplace down back in July 2024, at least that's what they want you to think. You see, the store is actually still online if you go to "Game Details" on a game, but you can't buy anything from it as it'll just throw you an error telling you to visit some crap support article. Anyways,

NINA shut down, CrossTalk replaced it - September 20, 2025

y0, so around a week ago or something, NINA (the AIM/AOL revival dudes) shutdown, allegedly  because of a C&D (Cease and Desist) from AOL/Yahoo! and now everyone is ditching Escargot & NINA (including me) because of some other things that have been going on in the Escargot community. Also around a week ago they discontinued their Discord server, because of some Russian dude who bought his way to the Discord server staff team threatened someone to do illegal things to them and that sparked a whole lot of drama. In the end, the rest of the staff team left the server and they deleted the Discord server to quote, "protect 13,000 accounts from getting banned", because someone reported the server after this happened. Did I also mention that Escargot fakes member stats? According to the stats page on Escargot's website they have around 1,000 to 1,500 members online everyday, when it's at a maximum only 100-something members online. So, what happens now? Well, me and a lot of other people I know from the Escargot and NINA communities have all moved to CrossTalk! CrossTalk is what Escargot strived to be, only 10 times better. These madlads want to support MSN, AIM, ICQ and more again! And the best, they interop with each other! So, why don't you move away from Escargot and come to CrossTalk?

DRM sucks, GOG is best - July 13, 2025

Alright, so back in the early 2000s when piracy  was starting to become a major problem, software companies decided to fight back by making their software only usable, if the user activated the product online. This was right after the Windows 9x/2000 era where people just copied all the files from someone else's legitimate copy. Even though there already were serial key activation systems, it all worked with an algorithm that made sure if the entered key followed the guidelines of that algorithm. Sooner or later people started reverse engineering these algorithms and made programs that could just generate a valid key, also you could use some key that was given to you by someone, which 200 people before you have probably already used before. Now, the problem with activating software online was that, if the server for validating your key ever went offline, you could never use that software again, if it checked for a legit copy on startup or if you wanted to install that old piece of software because it just worked, then you can't even activate it anymore. This type of dumbass invention is what we call, DRM. (Digital Rights Management) DRM is everywhere, games, movies, shitty Adobe software and more.
The worst case of DRM is with games like The Crew, which is now unplayable due to Ubisoft shutting the servers down, I'm sure you've heard about this so I won't go into detail. Another example of crappy DRM is GFWL (Games for Windows Live), there were games like GTA IV which required GFWL to work or else it straight up won't run. Fortunately the hero in this story is GOG. I freakin' love these dudes, they grab old games, remove the DRM, resell them and make profit off of good deeds. It's a win/win for both parties.

Make instant messaging great again! - July 11, 2025

So, instant messaging, it's been around for almost 30 years now. Everybody online has an IM client, may it be Discord, WhatsApp, Skype (rest in peace), they all have one thing in common, messaging people. Back then, in the days of MSN and AIM, you could only message people and nothing more. No ads, no nonsense. Nowadays on platforms like Discord you have stuff like Nitro, where you have to pay 10$ a month for stuff like oh, cool profile themes, super reactions, HD video streaming and 500MB uploads. First off, nobody cares if you have a dragon flying over your profile the moment someone opens it, nobody gives a flying fuck about super reactions, Skype had HD video streaming for free, so why pay for it now? And with Nitro you can upload a Windows XP ISO image now to Discord? There's a reason why sites like MEGA and Dropbox exist, and you can upload files way larger than 500MB on them. It looks like Discord is just doing this for the money, even though they already have enough money to fund the platform and are just trying to get more money out of its users. This is the scummiest behavior I've seen from an IM company ever. And don't even get me started on the lawsuits Discord has on its back, ever since 2022 rolled around Discord has been getting sued nonstop for child safety, difficulty in canceling Nitro subscriptions and on and on. I'm surprised that they haven't been slapped with a class action lawsuit yet.

A rant about Microsoft Product Activation - July 9, 2025

I don't really use Microsoft Product Activation that often, probably because all the Microsoft software I use is old and doesn't need online/telephone activation since the process is just annoying as hell. What the hell is even the point of Microsoft Product Activation? It's ultimately already failed since you can just find unused product keys online and just activate them over the phone with some robot, because the online activation servers for stuff like Windows XP and Office XP and above are already dead and instead you have to call some 20 year-old Microsoft phone number from some random support article. Basically the system failed a long time ago and they still use it for whatever reason. You can still even use Windows 7 Professional keys to activate Windows 10/11 in 2025! There are so many Windows 7 product keys online for free that are either VLKs (Volume License Key) or old unused Retail keys which you can just use instead of paying barbaric prices for a legal version of Windows 10/11. 140$ alone for Windows 11 Home and 199.99$ for Windows 11 Pro!? No way! Windows 1.0 cost just 99$ when it released back in 1985, so how did everything go wrong? No wonder why so many people pirate Windows/Office nowadays.
